Orange shirt day

Tiny House Warriors Donation

During the acknowledgement of Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30th, students expressed an opinion that raising money through the sale of Orange Shirts was not in support of truth and reconciliation.

Although there were no profits made from the shirts, we recognized the need to listen to the student voices in regards to turning our good intentions into actions and learning more about what is happening in the larger community.

After consulting with our DSBN Indigenous leads, we set up a meeting between one of our students who was passionate about the issue, Genevieve LeFleuvre, and the Indigenous Consultant at the Board.

Out of these meetings and discussions has come a plan for Reconcili-Action - putting restorative and inclusive beliefs into action. As the first step in this process, Governor Simcoe has been given the approval to donate $300 to an Indigenous initiative that our students feel passionate about. We have researched various options and the decision was made to make a donation to the Tiny House Warriors campaign.

Our hope is that through continued actions such as this, we can all gain a deeper understanding of the need for reconciliation.
