The medal maybe silver but her efforts are gold.  Governor Simcoe student Sama Nanayakkara has won the Sovereign`s Medal for Volunteers Award from the Governor General of Canada in recognition of her volunteer efforts.

The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields.  As an official Canadian honour, the Medal for Volunteers incorporates and replaces the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. The Medal builds on the legacy and spirit of the Caring Canadian Award by honouring the dedication and commitment of volunteers.

Sama is one of 10 students from across Ontario who have won this year's award.  The award comes as recognition of her time involved with and leadership in the Simcoe Outreach Society (SOS).  She is a strong, courageous leader who initiates new campaigns based on her intrinsic desire to help others in need and on causes that move her.

Congratulations, Sama!
