All students travelling to Toronto to see “Come From Away” on Thursday are reminded to meet in the front foyer at 10:20am. Students are asked to dress appropriately NOT only for the weather, but for attending a live theatrical performance. Please bring food and drink for the ride and/or money as needed. You will have time to eat lunch just before the show, but it will depend on the traffic. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Risko.

Guidance
Grade 12’s are reminded of their sessions tomorrow on how to apply to college and university in Ontario.  We will begin Period 4 at 12:10 with university applicants and then college applicants will be called down at 12:40 to the theatre.

Mr. DiRamio - Robotics
On the weekend, the robotics team competed at the offseason STEMley Cup Tournament in Hamilton. This was the 5th year of the tournament and the 5th time in a row that our team has won! In addition to being Event Champions, the team was also awarded the “best offensive robot” award. Congratulations to the entire team and a special shout-out to the drive team of Nolan G., Meghan G., Noah B., and Parker T.

Congratulations to the Sr Girls Basketball team who defeated Grimsby last night in playoff action by a score of 39-22.  Leading the way was Allie A. with 14, Jamie A. 9, Jenneka M. 6 and Mia F. 8 points. The team will be hosting Eden tomorrow in the Zone Final at 3:00pm.  Good luck girls!

Dance Club
Attention all students interested in joining the Simcoe Dance Club.  We will be having our first session this Thursday from 2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. in the auditorium.  This is open to all interested students regardless of experience. Please come prepared to stretch and move.  Jazz shoes or running shoes would be the best for this first session. If you have questions, please see Mrs. Gilmour in the library or Mrs. Mancuso.

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball team who competed in the A.N. Myer tournament on Friday.  The team advanced to the finals with wins over Burlington Nelson and Myer. The team came up just short in the finals to a talented Crossley team losing by 6 points.  Leading the way in scoring was Allie A, Jamie A. and Mia F. Strong play from Jenneka M. and Kelly M.  Yesterday the team finished there league play by defeating Heritage 59-28.  The team will start playoffs next Monday. Great job girls.

Congratulations to all boys who competed in SOSSA Cross Country at Fireman’s Park. Solid efforts from Owen, Cole, Maddex, Elliot, Kareem and Ryan.  The coaches would like to thank all athletes for their contributions this year and hope to see you in the spring for track and field.

Mr. Cockburn - Student Vote 
Here are the Student Vote results from last Wednesday’s mock Federal Election 2019. A total of 514 votes were cast. The Liberals won the election with 182 votes, the New Democratic Party had 126 votes, the Green Party received 73 votes, the Conservative Party had 71 votes and the People’s Party of Canada received 43 votes. There were 19 spoiled ballots. A big thank you goes out to the Simcoe student body for taking part in such an important civic duty. As well, a big thank you to staff and administration for their election day support. Well done Simcoe!!

Mr. Brophy-  Ski and Snowboard Club
There will be a meeting this thursday at lunch in the library for all those interested in joining this years ski club.   If you are unable to attend come and grab the permission forms from Mr. Brophy, Mr. Donevan, Mr. Spiece or Ms. Lockyer.

Mr. Brophy-  Europe Trip 2021
There will be an information meeting tomorrow night at 7 pm for all those that are interested in going to Spain and Portugal March Break 2021.  The meeting will take place in the library and should you or your parents not be able to attend you can get all of the details from Mr. Brophy in the Phys. Ms Stiefelmeyer - Senior Girls Basketball
Congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball team who captured the Consolation Championship Trophy on Saturday by defeating Welland Centennial 34 to 22.  The team played an amazing game with only 5 players. Led by tournament All Star Allie A. with 17 points and sister Jamie A. with 13 points. Also contributing to the victory was Alicia R., Jenneka M., Emma F.and KP T.  Great job Redcoats

The Ontario College Fair is today! Please be ready in the main foyer by 10:05 a.m. We will be back at Simcoe by 12:45 p.m. You can buy lunch there or bring your own. Looking forward to meeting with reps from the 24 Ontario Colleges! Grade 12’s - This week is Post-Secondary Liaison visitor week.  You can check out the schedule on the Guidance Event Calendar. Niagara University it here Period 2 in the Seminar Room 120 today and the University of Ottawa is here period 4 in Seminar Room 120. Please ask your teachers in advance of a session if you will be permitted to attend; important lessons and evaluations take precedence.  If you would like printed material but are unable to come down please ask your teacher to send a runner down at the beginning of the session to collect for the class. For all sessions you must report to your teacher first for attendance before coming down. Attendance will also be taken at the sessions. Tomorrow - King’s College at Western University will be here period 1 in the Seminar Room 120.

Attention Grade 9 students and any grade 10, 11, or 12, students who are new to Ontario.  Today during MSIP students will be asked to travel to room 308A. There will be a quick review of HOUR REPUBLIC and students will also be completing the grade 9 requirement for their Individual Pathways Plan.  All grade 9 students must attend.

Mr Potalivo - Girls Field Hockey
Congratulations to the girls field hockey team on yesterday’s conclusion to an excellent season. The team put forth an outstanding performance despite the cold and windy conditions. The zone semi-final game vs Grimsby went to overtime at 1-1 with a goal scored by Laren. The game was decided in a sudden-death shootout, with the team eventually losing to Grimsby. Great job Redcoats on a fantastic season!

Congratulations to the girls field hockey team on 2 well-played games. Yesterday they won 5-0 versus Laura Secord in a great overall team performance. In the second game they went to a shootout after a 1-1 game, eventually losing to Grimsby. Goals were scored by Mackenzie Z. (2), Laren W. (2), Hannah C. and Khushpreet T. The team will play in the zone semi-finals next Thursday October 17th. Great job Redcoats!

After a phenomenal trip last March Break to Greece and Rome the initial buzz has now started for the 2021 March Break trip to Portugal and Spain.  Students have already signed up and Mr. Brophy will be hosting an information meeting today at lunch in the library. If you are unable to attend or have any questions, come see Mr. Brophy in the gym at lunch.  There will also be a parent meeting October 23rd in the library at 7pm to answer any questions and aid in registration.

Mr. Grant - Groovy Parade People
This year’s parade was spectacular! The weather held off and the Governor Simcoe float became a gleaming beacon under the grey, autumn, St. Catharines’ sky. I would like to thank Ms. Livingston for procuring the keys...It was great to see Mr. Brophy and his classy football team collecting desperately needed food donations for Community Care. Thanks to Ms Lockyer and Mrs. Peck and the glowing, tie-dyed-clad Link Crew who was also in full force, collecting donations and carrying signs, telling the world that “Simcoe is in the house!”  Speaking of tie dye, thanks to Groovy Food who provided the groovy parade soundtrack. Thanks to Mme. Wade for helping with the float decorating session at Brock, and a special thanks goes out to the float decorating and dismantle team - I hope you all come back next year! Thanks also to all of the Simcoe staff and students who cheered us on - we will see you next September!

Mme Wade - Orange Shirt Day
Today is Orange Shirt Day. Today we recognize the harm done to generations of First Nations’ children by Indigenous Residential Schools with the hope of creating healing and reconciliation. Today we are welcoming a Residential School survivor who will be speaking with our Grade 10 history class: Steenburg, Donevan, Wade & Cockburn and our Indigenous literature class.  Please dismiss these students at 8:50 to go directly to the theatre. Thank you for wearing orange today and bringing attention to this important piece of our history.

Mr. Stewart - Rowan’s Law Day
Today is Rowan’s Law Day. Rowan Stringer was a student in Ottawa, Ontario who passed away in 2013 due to a concussion related injury.  Thank you to those who wore purple today to commemorate Rowan and to raise awareness around concussion safety.  Two main messages to take from today:  First, please be aware of concussion symptoms – there are posters around the school highlighting what those symptoms will look and feel like.  Secondly, if you are experiencing concussion symptoms, please tell an adult immediately.  Our concussion lead in the building is Mr. Tope, but you can also communicate with any teacher, coach or adult and we will get you the support you need.  Madam Key and Students’ Council will be running concussion awareness activities at today lunch.

This Wednesday, September 25th is our annual Rowan’s Law Day, named for Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from Ottawa, Ontario who passed away in the spring of 2013 from a concussion-related condition known as “second impact syndrome”. Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were established to honour her memory and to bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety.  Please show your support by wearing purple this Wednesday and by taking part in lunch time activities in the front foyer.

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball team who competed in the St. Francis basketball tourny on Thursday and Friday.  The team went 2 and 1 defeating GFESS and Myer. Leading the way in scoring were the Addy sisters Allie and Jamie. Also contributing were Mia Friesen, Alicia Reid and Jennika McIntosh.  Strong defence was key to the 2 wins. The girls open there league on Thursday here against Grimsby

This Wednesday, September 25th is our annual Rowan’s Law Day, named for Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from Ottawa, Ontario who passed away in the spring of 2013 from a concussion-related condition known as “second impact syndrome”. Rowan’s Law and Rowan’s Law Day were established to honour her memory and to bring awareness to concussions and concussion safety.  Please show your support by wearing purple this Wednesday and by taking part in lunch time activities in the front foyer.

Mr Brophy-Redcoats Football
Yesterday the Varsity Redcoats began their season with a tough overtime victory 16-10 over Grimsby .  The team showed resilience in battling penalties and opening game excitement. Touchdowns were scored by Max G. and Alex R. on passes from Andrew S.   Danny L. hit a 30 yards field goal as well to round out the scoring. The defense had 3 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries. Next week the team plays at Centennial and on October 3rd we host Thorold for our inaugural under the lights game at 7pm.  Come out and support the team onto victory.

This is an international exchange program open to 15 - 18 year olds who wish to spend up to a year living with host families abroad and attending school in a different country. After a great season last year we are excited to build on that success and bring a championship back to Simcoe.  There is a position for everyone and Grade nines and 10’s are encouraged to join. Should there be numbers we will be running a jr team this year. Get involved and make this year exceptional.
