Another school year has come to an end, so it is with great sorrow that I must tell all of you that “All Library books are due back to the library.” The library will be open for you to return library books until June 29 at 3:00 p.m. Thank you for a wonderful year in the library and I do hope that you all enjoyed reading the library books.

DSBN-OBEA Business Contest - Mr. Potalivo
Several Grade 10 Business students submitted entries to the DSBN-OBEA Business Promotions contest competing against students from across the DSBN. Congratulations to Jack R., Nathan D. and Denis T.who were awarded the first place prize for their Jumpstart Fundraiser poster and promotion plan. Honorable mentions were also given to Riley L., Liam M., Lily Y. and Anastasia W. Congratulations!

Guidance
There will be a meeting of the graduating class today during period 2.  Potential graduates are asked to go to period 2 first for attendance and then join us in the Cafeteria.  Remember, you will be voting for hats on or hats off - majority rules. We will discuss gown and ticket pick up and much more.  The meeting should take 20 minutes to ½ an hour. See you in the Cafeteria shortly.

The provincial election is happening this Thursday, have you been following the news? There is change in the air, and today you will have a chance to voice your opinion on the candidates and political parties. Students will be coming around to your MSIP classes today with voting ballots and boxes from the Student Vote program. Your votes will be counted for the Student Vote program, so please participate! The winner will be announced on Wednesday.

Track & Field - Mr. Lavictoire
At the Regionals track meet last week, your Redcoats competed with the best in Southern Ontario, and laid it all on the track or field, with a chance to go to OFSAA.  In the end, 7 athletes qualified: be sure to offer good luck wishes to Nathan D., Remy G., Cam B., Mia F., Kanice M., Emma M., and Sierra D. as they compete at the biggest high school track meet in North America later this week.  All athletes must see Mr. Lavictoire today to get info sheets for OFSAA.

Guidance

Are you interested in playing football for Simcoe next year?  We will be having a spring camp the next three Tuesdays and Thursdays.   Camp will run from 2:30 till 3:30. Are you interested in playing football for Simcoe next year?  We will be having a spring camp the next three Tuesdays and Thursdays.   Camp will run from 2:30 till 3:30. Attention all Regionals qualifiers:  make certain you have completed all required OFSAA documentation if you intend to compete at OFSAA.  See Mr. Lavictoire right at the start of lunch in Room 306 if you have any questions. Also, make certain you see the coaches about transportation arrangements.  There are meet schedules on the door to Room 306 as always. We leave on Thursday right after 2nd period, and on Friday we leave at 6:30 am.

Track and Field - Mr. Lavictoire
There be SOSSA champions among you Simcoe!  At the SOSSA track championships yesterday, your Redcoats powned the competition, placing 2nd overall in the team standings.  Gold medals were earned by Kanice M. in 200 wheelchair, Mia F. in hurdles and triple jump, Nathan D. in javelin, Emma M. in javelin, Sierra D. in intermediates, Robbie S. in hurdles, and the girls relay team of Mia, S., Olivia and Nadia.  Practices resume Sunday at 10 am for all Regionals qualifiers.

All staff, family and friends are invited to attend The DSBN Graduate Art Show this evening, Tuesday, May 22nd beginning at 5:00pm at The DSBN Education Centre (Carlton Street). This juried show will feature grade 12 artists from across this school board. Meimei Y., Rosie K. and Meridien G. have been selected to represent our school. Dig It and Home Build Coop Applications for 2018-2019
We are excited to announce that the 2018-2019 SHSM Regional Program Applications are now available! The DUE DATE for applications to both the Regional SHSM Construction HomeBuild and Horticulture DiG iT Programs is TUESDAY, MAY 22, 2018 to the Coop Office so that we can submit them to the HomeBuild and DiG iT teachers as they would like to arrange and conduct interviews in June with potential students.  Applications are available in the Coop or Guidance Offices.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Peter and the Starcatcher” for an amazing production. You made us laugh out loud, made us hold back tears of joy, and allowed us to remember what it meant to be young again. She is incredibly proud of all of your hard work and dedication over the past seven months, and is grateful for being able to work with each and every  one of you. Your Redcoats competed yesterday at the Bulldog meet, and a great day out was matched by great performances.  Highlights include giant personal best by Nathan D’Costa in discus and Mia Friesen in hurdles, while Emma McDougall won javelin, Remy Gavanac took first in pole vault, and Jonny Othman led the way in 400 hurdles.  Practices resume today, in the weight room if it is stormy outside. All athletes must speak to Mr. Lavictoire before noon tomorrow so he gets your Zone entries correct.

On Tuesday the badminton team competed at SOSSA in Hamilton.  A huge congratulations to Raiya Millin and Alex Rieyan who finished second in the Junior Mixed Doubles Category.  A great job by all players that competed at SOSSA.

At the Campion track meet yesterday, your Redcoats performed outstandingly and proved that the Zone title is theirs for the taking. First place finishes were earned by Lucas T. in high jump, Denis T. with double gold in hurdles and high jump, Mia F. in triple jump, Nathan D. in jav, and Allison A. in hurdles.  There is an optional practice today after school, and a regular team practice tomorrow at 10 am.

Did you know that disposable plastic water bottles that end up in landfills will take 1000 years to break down while adding many toxic chemicals to the ecosystem? Please make sure to recycle water bottles in our blue recycle bins or better yet bring your own reusable water bottle and make use of our water filling stations. Be kind to the Environment!! April 22nd in Earth Day! Earth day celebrations are taking place at Malcolmson Eco Park from 8am-1pm on Saturday April 21st. Please see Mrs. Tilly for more information.

FYI - Brock University's Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre is operating a transitions program for Grade 12 students admitted to Brock who would particularly benefit from extra support as they transition to university. At the York indoor meet, your tiny Redcoats team delivered some solid performances.  First places were earned by Victoria B. in her first meet since knee surgery; by Nadia P. in hurdles; and by Denis T. in hurdles, who also earned silver in long and high jump.  Mia F. earned first in triple, and her rivalry with Sierra D. was renewed, as they took first and second in hurdles. Practices resume for all team members today.

Ms Breivik - Cheerleading
This weekend the cheerleaders competed in the Cheer Evolution Nationals Competition in Niagara Falls.  They performed their routine twice with excellent energy, performance, and perfect stunts. They placed third overall, however the difference in final scores between the top three teams was only 0.2 points! All of the coaches want to commend the team for their dedication and drive to learn and hit such difficult skills this season. Congratulations!

Last week EF Tours had a blitz in which the price of next years tour was dropped by $200.  They are offering that same value again until the end of March. Don’t miss out and book your trip as we leave less than a year away.   Just think you could be seeing all the sites in Rome and Greece which is 20 degrees celsius during March. At the Morris indoor meet on Thursday, your Redcoats started off the track season very well.  First place finishes were earned by Lucas T. and Raiya M. Denis T. had a great meet, finishing 2nd in hurdles, 3rd in long jump and 3rd in high jump.  Practices resume today, outside if the weather permits.

Congratulations to the following students who competed at the DSBN French public speaking contest yesterday; Mario B., Quinton M., Victoria S., Jennika M., Hannah C., and Kat D..  Jennika and Hannah placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the grade 9/10 extended French category and Quinton M. was 2nd in the grade 11/12 francophone category. Mario B. placed 1st in the francophone category and was the overall high scorer of the day and DSBN champion.  He was also selected to represent the DSBN at the provincial championships in May!

Drama Festival - Mrs. Risko
Congratulations to the 33 students involved in the National Theatre School Drama Festival for their amazing performance of a brand new play called "Darklight.”  She is proud to announce that the tradition of excellence in the Arts continues here at Simcoe! At the end of the Festival, we were recognized for Calvin D’s work on lighting design and we were also awarded the trophy for Best Canadian Play, The OSSTF Award for Theatre to Change the World and the Peltoma Award for and Outstanding Production. Now we are off to perform our production at the Regional Drama Festival in Hamilton in April. Mrs. Risko would like to congratulate all the students involved, and she is so excited to see you wow the audience at Regionals!  Congratulations!

The Break is over and track season is now in full swing.  If only we could get the sun to heat up our track. SOS - Miss Lockyer
SOS will be collecting aluminium can tabs from now until mid-may to help build wheelchairs. We would love for your contributions towards this and we encourage you to bring as many as you can. There will be a few buckets around the school, two will be located in the foyer and one inside cafeteria doors. Feel free to get your friends and family members involved to help build a wheelchair for someone in need. Also - SOS is collecting toiletries for Community Care - toothpaste, soap, shampoo - anything you can contribute would be appreciated.  Bins are located in the front foyer. SOS members - we are meeting today at lunch in room 318.

Robotics - Mr. DiRamio
Last weekend the robotics team competed at the Ryerson District Event. The team ranked second after qualifying rounds with a record of 11-1 and went on to win the event! Simbotics was also awarded the Excellence in Engineering award. Congratulations team! In next week the team will be off to their second district event in Windsor.

800 athletes, 2 intense days of competition….OFSAA Wrestling 2018 was held in Windsor, this past week. We had 2 amazing student athletes who represented Governor Simcoe. Fantastic performances for Matt J. and Mia F., for their very first time competing in this event. Matt J. had a top 10 performance in a tough  67.5kg weight class division. Mia F., a first year wrestler, finished 6th in a very experienced 61kg division. Simcoe is very proud of your accomplishments! Congratulations to both for your exceptional poise and performance!

Congratulations to Laci Shute, Olivia B., Emma G., Antigone D., Madeline U., Maya G., Rachel M. and Georgia S. on their amazing performances at the Ontario Indoor rowing championships on Saturday.  Georgia had the girls’ top placement of the day in 8th place in the senior lightweight category earning her second consecutive top 10 finish at the provincial championships!

Swim Team - Mrs. Tilly
Congratulations to Mat T. and Ben L. who competed at OFSAA swimming last week in Windsor. Both boys swam well and did Governor Simcoe proud. Ben was able to qualify for the consolation finals of the 100m Men’s Freestyle and did an amazing job finishing 15th overall as a grade 9 competing against a field of mostly grade 11 and 12’s. Congratulations on a great season!

Wrestling-Ms. Nuyten
WOW!! What an amazing performance by our Simcoe wrestlers at SOSSA yesterday. Bryn L. had his best tournament of the season, finishing 4th in 64kg. Mia F. in her first year of wrestling, competing against a very seasoned 5th year wrestler, won silver in 61kg and is moving onto to OFSAA, and winning his first ever SOSSA title is Matt J., gold in 67.5kg and is also representing Governor Simcoe at OFSAA. Congratulations to all members of the Simcoe wrestling team and a huge thank you for your dedication and commitment. Good Luck also to Sara D., Mia F. and Bryn L., they will be competing in the Ontario Winter Games next weekend. See you all at practice!!!

The grand opening of the Off the Wall show is this evening from 4:30pm - 6:00pm at The DSBN Education Centre (on Carlton Street) and features artists from grade 9 through grade 11 from across the DSBN. Top 3 finishers were: Sara D.: Bronze , Mia F.: Silver and winning his first Zone championship capturing gold was Matt J. Congratulations to all members who move onto SOSSA this Thursday, February 22 at Thorold. You all have made Simcoe proud!

Congratulations to the Simcoe swimmers competing at SOSSA yesterday at Brock University. Outstanding performances were given by Ben L. who won the men’s open 100m freestyle and came second in the men’s 50m freestyle. Mat T. placed 2nd in both the senior boy’s 50m Butterfly and the 100m Individual Medley. Ryenne O. placed 5th in the junior girls 50m breaststroke and the Junior girls Freestyle relay team of Caitlin T., Arlinda V., Ryenne O. and Madison G. placed 4th overall. Congratulations to all swimmers on a great season and best of luck to Ben L. and Mat T. who qualified to swim at OFSAA at the end of February in Windsor.

Yesterday the jr boys played Denis Morris and Sir Winston Churchill in the Bulldog Tournament but were winless in both games. The boys play today at 10:00am. Please excuse them at 9;00am today.

Students need to remember to review their course selection for 2018/19 with their parents this weekend.  Counsellor help day will be all day on Monday.  Travel via your msip to meet with a guidance counsellor in the library.   Any students eligible for First Nation, Metis or Inuit support are invited to attend an info session presented by the Canadian Armed Forces.  The presentation will introduce any opportunities that are available to students.  It will be about a 20 min presentation and you can sign up to attend in your guidance dept.

Tomorrow our robotics team is competing at the Southern Ontario VEX Robotics Qualifier, hosted here at Governor Simcoe. Matches start at 9:00 AM and the elimination rounds start at 3:30 PM. The event is free, so come on out and cheer our team on!

Swim Team - Mrs. Tilly
Congratulations to the Simcoe Swim Team for their performance at yesterday’s zone finals swim meet. Ben L. won both the Open boys 50m Freestyle and the 100m Freestyle and Mat T. won the senior boys 50m freestyle. Also qualifying for SOSSA are the boys freestyle relay team of Lucas R., Julien W., Noah S. P. and Mat T., as well as the junior girls freestyle relay team of Caitlin T., Arlinda V., Madison G. and Ryenne O. Special mention to Arlinda V. who competed while sick and still managed to place 4th and qualify for SOSSA in the junior girls 200m Freestyle. Congratulations swimmers!

Last night the Jr Boys took on Greater Fort Erie at the AN Myer Tournament. Our Boys were victorious beating Fort Erie 51-36. Please excuse the boys today after lunch as they play again at 1:00pm.

Congratulations to the Sr. Girls Volleyball team who went undefeated on Friday to win the E.L.Crossley Volleyball tournament. The team defeated A.N.Myer 2-0 in the semis and then dominated the host school Crossley to win the championship 2-0.

Junior Girls Volleyball - Ms Stiefelmeyer
Congratulations to the Junior Girls Volleyball team who competed at McMaster on Friday.  The team went undefeated in pool play beating Ancaster, Blakelock and York.  In the quarters they defeated a tough team from Westdale Hamilton but came up short to the eventual champs Aurora in the semi finals.  Great play by Alyssa E, Kennedi B. and Alicia R.  The girls start league play on Wednesday in Grimsby.  Great job girls.

The results are top 3 finish only: In the Novice Girls division, Maddy A. won silver at 57.5 kilos, Mia F. won gold at 61 kilos. Also in the Open Girls division, Sara D. won Bronze in 61 kilo division. In the Open boys division, Gabe D. won silver at 51, Robert D. won gold at 64 and Eric W. a bronze in the unlimited weight division. Next tournament is at Blessed Trinity on Thursday, November 30th.

Europe Trip
Last week at the assembly Mr. Tork discussed the 2019 Europe Trip.  There are still spots available for this amazing experience.  There will be a Parent Meeting this Thursday November 16th at 7 pm for anyone interested  in the Simcoe Library.  There will also be a meeting tomorrow  November 14th in the library at lunch to discuss the new incentives offered by EF Tours.

Robotics
On the weekend, the robotics team competed at the STEMley Cup offseason robotics tournament in Hamilton. They placed 2nd after the qualifying round and went on to win the event! This is the third year of the event, and the third straight victory at it for our team. Great work, Simbotics!

Attention all students - Redcoat Council elections are coming!  This year we have 3 students running for the President position - Isabelle Newkirk, Maddie Roberts, and Tyren St. Cyr.  In your msip classes beginning tomorrow your msip teacher will be able to show you each candidates video presentation.  You will hear from the candidates during our Recognition Assembly on Thursday.  Voting will take place this Friday.  The student with the most votes will be president, the other two remaining will take the positions of co-vice-presidents.

Today is hat day! You are only permitted to wear a hat if you brought in your 2 food donations this morning and received a hand stamp.  Anyone who arrives after period one may see Mme Key in room 308D to make your donation and receive a stamp.  If your stamp washes off, you must see Mme Key for a new one.  To avoid issues, students should be ready to show teachers their stamps.  A list of participating students has been made available to staff on first class.  Tomorrow is plaid and flannel day.  Participants, don’t forget to pick up your draw tickets during the first 15 minutes of lunch outside the Redcoat Council office.  Monday is our pumpkin carving contest.  Sign up your team of 3 today in Guidance.

This Friday at lunch in the library, Open Mic will be hosting a special “Singer-Songwriter” event in tribute of the late, great Gord Downie.  We’ll be taking it back to basics, so grab your guitars, your ukuleles, and your bongos.  Dust off your poems and demonstrate the power of the spoken word.  Be there on Friday to see multiple performances and to honour a powerful Canadian artist.

Thanks to all who participated in Redcoat Day yesterday.  Today is Band-tee day.  All participants are asked to stop by the student council office at lunch today to receive a ticket for the Spirit week draw next Tuesday.  Tomorrow is hat day.  Bring your 2 non-perishable food items to the foyer before the start of period 1 to receive a stamp and 2 raffle tickets that will allow you to wear your hat.

This week, SOS is partnering with Community Care for  “We Scare Hunger”. Leading up to Halloween we will have Community Care bins in the front foyer for non-perishable goods. Drop off an item and receive a candy and be the change you want to see in the world!

Simcoe Remembers - Mme Wade
Vimy Ridge. Dieppe. D-Day. The Korean War. Iraq. Afghanistan. Canadian forces have served for over a century, helping to keep and build peace all over the world. Simcoe History department is looking for your work to help create our “Simcoe Remembers” publication for Remembrance Day. We are looking for essays, poems or posters that reflect on the theme of remembrance. Please see Mme Wade if you are interested or want more information.

Jr Boys Volleyball
Congratulations to the jr boys volleyball team on their decisive 2-0 victory last night over Heritage Christian.  The boys have their final match of the season this Monday versus Grimsby.

Congratulations to the Junior Girls Basketball Team for winning the Centennial Classic on Friday afternoon.  The team defeated St Paul, Centennial and Sir Winston Churchill in the finals by 20 points.  Great scoring from Allison Addy, Alicia Reid, Jenneke McIntosh and Mia Friesen.  All members contributed to the win and great cheering from the bench.   Great job girls.

The University of Waterloo was here during period 1.  Redeemer Christian University will be here period 4 today in the seminar room.  The University of Toronto will also be here during period 5 in the library. Due to the faculty work stoppage at Ontario Colleges, the College Information Program (CIP) scheduled for Monday, October 23rd  at Niagara College has been cancelled.  The Simcoe trip will not be taking place.

Today during Period 5 we are all going to come together as a big Simcoe Family to celebrate all of our fall student athletes and wish our Varsity Football team luck during their final home football game. Congratulations to the Redcoats Varsity Football team for their big win, against Grimsby yesterday, in the opening game on our new turf field. Simcoe won 27 - 19, on running touchdowns by Darrin J, Remi G, and Danny L, as well as 70 yard catch and run touchdown by Johnny O from Andrew S. Simcoe’s next game will be next Thursday, at home, against Eden. Hope to see you there.

Simcoe Remembers - Mme Wade
From the First World War, Second World War and Canada’s numerous peacekeeping missions, close to 2 million men and women have served our country, and over 128 000 have given their lives in defence of peace and freedom. What does it mean to remember the service and sacrifice of so many Canadian service men and women? What does this mean to you? This year the Simcoe History Department is calling on you to help in the creation of a publication called “Simcoe Remembers.” You can write a poem, an essay or make a poster that reflects on the theme of Remembrance. Participating students have a chance to win up to $1000 and a trip to Ottawa for Remembrance Day. Please contact Mme Wade if you are interested or want more information.

Governor Simcoe is joining the Provincial wide initiative to protect and preserve our planet. EcoSchools Ontario is a program designed to take action and make positive, eco-friendly choices in our school and in our community. If you are interested in getting involved, please join the Governor Simcoe Greencoats, a new eco-friendly club at the school. Varsity Football - Brophy, Spiece & Grantis

Last night, at St. Catharines Collegiate, your boys’ Varsity Football team won their first game of the season, with a 34-12 victory over the Saints. Touchdowns were scored by Cort D, Johnny O, Joe Fand two by Darrin J. Andrew S played a great game at quarterback, throwing for two touchdown passes. The Redcoats next game is the home opener  and new field dedication, against Grimbsy next Wednesday. Hope to see you there.

Orange Shirt Day - Ms. Gerbes
Did you know that there is archeological evidence of Indigenous peoples living in Canada 13,000 - 15,000 years ago?  Europeans arrived to the land we now call Canada less than 500 years ago. Orange Shirt Day is a day to celebrate Indigenous cultures in Canada.  This Friday all classes will take a moment to learn about Canada’s Indigenous populations. All staff and students are encouraged to wear orange this Friday.

Rankin Run - Miss Lockyer
Thanks again to everyone that made this year’s Rankin Run such a success!  We were able to raise over $4000 for this great cause!  Congratulations to Dylan Davidson and Rihab Nori for winning the Samsung Galaxy tablets and to Miss Scordino’s period 1, grade 12 chemistry class for being the top fundraising class - they raised almost $500!  Way to go Simcoe!

Mr. Grant is looking for a float decorating crew for this Saturday’s Grape and Wine Parade. The float decoration will happen at 5:00pm TODAY at CAA across from Brock University. It should take 1.5 hours to decorate. Interested students will need to make their own way to (and from) the CAA. Community hours will be given. See Mr. Grant for details.

If you would like to change your MSIP, students may pick up an “MSIP Request Change Form” from Guidance this week.  In order to change an msip you must get permission from the teacher you would like to leave as well as the teacher you would like to go to.  Changes will only be made when there is adequate room in an MSIP.  Forms will be out for the rest of this week and can be handed back in to Guidance on Monday.

Tennis - Ms. Gerbes
This past Tuesday Governor Simcoe’s Senior Tennis team competed at Zone. Lucas Romanelli came third overall in boy’s singles after losing a heartbreaker in the semifinals. Isabelle Newkirk didn’t lose a match all day and won the girl’s singles division.  Isabelle will move on to compete in SOSSA in early October.  Great playing team!

Last night your Jr Boys Volleyball team faced 12 time SOSSA champions Eden in their home opener.  The boys played a great game and defeated Eden 2-1 in their first match of the season.  Way to go Redcoats!  Come cheer on our teams next Thursday as we take on Thorold in “our house.”

Just a reminder to grade 9 students to return their BBQ forms to their period 1 teachers today and tomorrow.  Forms are due by Monday.

Simcoe’s Rankin Run is fast approaching on Friday September 22!  Remember to bring in your forms and money by tomorrow to get a Rankin Run t-shirt.  This is going to be a great event followed by a BBQ and we even have some food trucks coming - an amazing day that also gives back to our community!

Bring your “smile”.  Picture Day is Tuesday, September 12th (tomorrow).  All students must have their pictures taken for a Student ID Card (no cost) and yearbook (if permission was documented on the student registration form).

Tennis: Ms. Gerbes      
There will be a meeting tomorrow at the beginning of lunch for anyone interested in playing tennis this year in Room 318.  Practices will start on Thursday right after school.  The tennis season is short and the teams are picked by next week so you need to attend the meeting tomorrow and be ready to play.
 
Girls Basketball: Ms. Stiefelmeyer  
The senior girls basketball team will begin practices today after school at 2:20pm in the gym.  Any grade 9 and 10s who are interested in playing basketball can attend the practice today.  Junior tryouts officially will start on Wednesday at 2:20pm
 
Athletics: Ms. Stiefelmeyer    
If you are a new student to the school and have come from another high school and want to play sports at Simcoe this year, you must see Ms. Stiefelmeyer in the gym at lunch to get a transfer form.  You will not be eligible to play school sports until this form is completed.
 
Sr. Boys Volleyball : Mr. Cockburn      
Attention any and all boys interested in playing Senior Boys volleyball! There will be a brief but very important meeting outside the gym immediately after school today! Tryouts will begin Wednesday at 4pm sharp!
 
Field Hockey:  Ms. Lockyer    
All girls who are interested in playing field hockey this year - there will be a quick intro meeting Wednesday at the beginning of lunch in room 308A.
 
Football:  Mr. Brophy  
Are you ready for some football!   Redcoats football both senior and junior practices will begin tomorrow after school.   Practices will be every day after school from 2:30 to 4:30.   Shorts, t shirt and running shoes or cleats are all this is necessary.   If you have any questions or are unable to make the first practice come see Mr. Brophy at lunch in the gym.
